At the Overlook Resort in North Carolina, Liam meets owner Carter Galloway. Carter has a passion for the hospitality business to rival Liam’s own, and it’s not hard to see where their shared interests—and attraction—could lead. But Carter has no interest in a fling, and Liam has no intention of walking away from the career he fought so hard for. If they want a taste of happiness together, they’ll have to find the courage to break the bonds threatening to pull them apart.

Blurb: A fairy-tale vacation—if he can get the ending right.

American nurse Finch Mason steps beyond the comfort of his orderly life and takes a dream trip to England, complete with a National Trust Pass so he can visit numerous historical sites. At the first one on his list, he’s warmly welcomed—and told he bought a pass good for two.

Finch doesn’t hesitate to offer the pass to Benedict, a handsome Brit also there on an outing. They spend a magical week touring the countryside, and while it’s too soon to get attached, Finch wishes their time together would never end.

Then Finch finds himself stuck abroad with no money, and he has no one to turn to but Benedict. Benedict is happy to help, but he also owes Finch some answers—such as who he really is and why he was at the estate where they first met.

Review: I’m racking my brain to figure out if I’ve read anything by Elle Brownlee before. Suffice to say I still can’t remember and so I went into this one with a completely open mind. The only thing I was expecting was the OTT drama and romance – though for some stories it is more difficult to suspend your disbelief than others – is what I’ve come to expect with the Dreamspun Desires series.

Sweet guy with a tragic past, Finch, is on his dream holiday of a life time in England. A mix up in ticketing leaves him with a double pass for one week instead of one pass for two weeks. Handsome Englishman, Benedict, happens to be at the National Trust Site Finch is visiting when he finds out this information and Finch happily invites Benedict to take on the second pass. However, this being a romance fiction, it is all too obvious that there is more to Benedict than meets the eye. After the week finishes Finch feels he is ready to part ways, though there is a definite spark between the guys. But when all his belongings are stolen, Finch has no one but Benedict to turn to – which is where he learns the truth.

OK, I really did enjoy reading this book, I truly did, but I didn’t fully connect with the characters. I think the one thing that irritated me and took away my enjoyment was that I was trying to figure out who leaves their valuables in a hostel – why not keep them on you? Seriously, that was one thing that I couldn’t suspend my disbelief for. There isn’t a lot of hot and heavy romance (in fact there was no sex), which I would expect from a love at first sight sort of trope, but it was nice to see the guys get to know each other for a week before getting all angsty. For this reason I think that while there was a connection between Benedict and Finch, it wasn’t really strong and needed more development.

If you’re into sweet, old fashioned and very English types of stories, this might be your type thing. For those that hate insta-love (and I know there are lots of you), you’d probably do best to stay away from this one, particularly since there is no actual sex going on as well (I personally find insta-tolerable in even the worst cases if there is hot sex).

When Charles Macquarrie inherits a fortune and an international clothing company, he also inherits three young cousins he desperately needs help raising. By a stroke of luck, he discovers and hires Jonathan Lamb, who spent his life in a children’s home due to chronic illness, to be his nanny.

But even when threatened by accounting discrepancies and mob connections, Jon and Charles won’t let go of the family they’ve built together without a fight.

Review: I’ve read about half of the Dreamspun Desires series, and now I get to hear them to! Finding Family is actually one of the books that I just haven’t got around to reading yet. For me these relatively short novellas cover a guilty desire of sweet romance – to me I liken Dreamspun Desires to the MM version of Harlequin romances. I suppose, in that sense, I can say many of the books have a predictable plot but for me that in no way takes away from the story.

I love Connie Bailey – her writing is so easy to follow and everything, in the end, comes together for a wonderful ending. As I said of the Dreamspun Desires series in general, the ending of Finding Family culminates to an incredibly sweet ending, even if it’s predictable. Okay, so there is a bit of adventure and a pretty serious corporate trouble – but between all that is two strong male leads and three great kids bursting with personality.

On top of all this enjoyment for is that fact that John Solo narrates this particular story. Seriously, I’m in love with his voice. (It’s kind of like the episode of the TV show The IT Crowd where the female lead is in love with the voice of a radio announcer. So not the point, I’m moving on.) I think I’m going to be saying this every time I review a book he narrates – John Solo absolutely nails the characters feelings and in particular for the leads, he really injects a lot of life and personality into the words he is reading off the page.

As for the story itself, everything is there in the blurb. Jonathan Lamb, aka Jon, grew up in a children’s home and raised by nuns (how Sound of Music is that?). He’s twenty and after being constantly sick as a child and then working at the children’s home, it’s time for him to get out on his own. To that end he becomes the manny for Charles Macquarrie. Charles is from a multi-millionaire family, but with a very tragic past. At twenty five he has lost his parents, runs the family corporation (despite events he does it well too) and now guardian to three much younger cousins after the death of his uncle and aunty. As I keep saying, it’s a recipe for sweetness, bordering on a diabetic coma.

There are what I feel to be a few call backs to The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, aside from the obviously stated ones. It tends to give Jon an around perfect feel, while it is Charles who is flawed, even though he is a young, rich and hot businessman/millionaire. I think it’s a bit of a change from the usual trope. If I must pick at anything, I feel that a lot more could have been made of Charles’ drinking, Jon’s reaction and the implications that alcohol seems to be a genetic problem in the Macquarrie family.

Blurb: Love has a steep learning curve.

Assistant high school principal Blake Barnes has everything he wants—a chance to help troubled students and an outlet for his passion for theater. Well, almost everything—he still goes home to an empty apartment. Then his high school crush explodes back into his life, the unexpected guardian of two boys in Blake’s care.

Thane Dalton has always been a bad boy through and through. Not much has changed, including his mistrust of authority figures, and no amount of institutional bureaucracy will keep him from protecting his nephews from the bullies terrorizing them. If that means butting heads with Blake, so be it.

Blake and Thane have lessons to learn: that they both have the boys’ best interests at heart, that the tension between them isn’t just confrontational, and that sparks can fly when opposites come together.

Review: For me Ariel Tachna has always been a bit of a hit and miss author when it comes to me enjoying the story and wanting to read until the end. In fact, this is the first book I’ve read by Tachna in over a year because I’ve been waiting for a blurb that just grabs me. Needless to say this story has been intrigued.

It is the story of assistant high school Principal Blake Barnes who loves his job because it allows him to do the two things he is most passionate about: teaching/helping teenagers and the theatre. This year the school is being a bit more ambitious with their theatre production – they need a lot more complex sets than usual – but it is clear that Blake thrives on his work. In a roundabout way this is how Blake’s high school crush Thane Dalton explodes into Blake’s very ordered world.

Thane was a senior when Blake was a freshman, so Thane never knew that Blake existed. Thane was known as the bad boy at school, he was never shy when it came to picking a fight or fight with authority. He’s worked hard to become the man he is – one which owns his own construction company. He just never planned that there would come the day when he had to become the guardian for his orphaned teenaged nephews. He has moved them to a new school, where the boys are targeted by the school jocks.

When Blake steps in to help the boys, he meets with Thane and fireworks explode. Just, not in the good way at first. Thane is true to himself and quick to judge Blake, who is trying his hardest to help. While trying to help the vulnerable teens, Thane and Blake start to develop a friendship.

I really did love this book but there is one reason why I couldn’t give it a 5/5… Thane, pain in the butt that he is, is used to completely misunderstand and hurt Blake with his anger. Seriously, that one act by Thane really pissed me off. I had thought that the man had learnt his lesson by now and part of me didn’t like how it flowed with the rest of the book. But in saying that, I did enjoy how Kit and Philip, Thane’s nephews, stepped in to help right the situation.

Review: Here I go, picking up the newest Dreamspun Desires and happily getting lost in the contrived soap opera that is what I have come to expect from these stories. Seriously, if you want something a bit more serious and heavy on the sickly sweet love plotlines and not like watching Neighbours or Days of Our Lives, then probably best to stay away. This warning cannot be any more relevant to Forgotten Paradise, which uses the predictable amnesia storyline.

But I get ahead of myself. Our two main players are Adam Preston and Jonah James (or is that his name? Hmm…) Adam runs the family company and programming whiz, he is now dealing with the stress of some massive corporation wanting to overtake the company which he holds so dearly. And so what does Adam do – he’s off on a short break to forget his troubles in the Dominican Republic. On holiday he meets sexy scuba instructor, Jonah James, who is a lot more than a simple dive instructor in paradise. He has no idea about whom or what he is. I won’t say anything else in case I give it away, but seriously, I’d wager that most readers will figure out Jonah’s identity within the first few chapters.

Of the two characters, I found Adam much more than relatable than Jonah. I wonder if it’s because Jonah seems to be in a constant loop of questioning himself and trying to figure out his true identity. For me the set up was to the novel was rather slow. I don’t know if that’s because a rather predictable storyline or if Shira Anthony just explains everything in exceptional detail which I don’t have the attention span for. I found that I had to persevere with the first half of the book and then once the pace picked up I really got into things.

Blurb: Horses were his passion, until he laid eyes on his boss.

Eighteen months ago, tragedy struck Bywater Farm when a riding accident killed Clay Hunter’s lover and traumatized his prize horse, King of Hearts. Clay and King lingered in limbo, surviving but not really living, until a breath of fresh air in the form of Luke Davis, a new groom in the stud barn, revives them both.

When a fall from King’s back sends Luke to the emergency room, Clay watches the shaky foundation of their budding relationship tumble down. Can Clay really love a jockey again, or will his fear of losing another man he loves keep them apart for good?

Reviewer: Gigi

Review: I always enjoy big hot studs and their trainers too. This book is full of cotton candy sweet romance. It’s fun to see Luke’s adventure into learning to gain a broken horses trust, and handle what other’s had deemed a dangerous horse to the point of riding him. Learning to handle his owner could be just as trying.

There is a smidge of angst here, dealing with a lost love, a dead mother, and two souls daring to love, but it’s mild. As far as the steamy scenes, it’s very slow, and very timid, and oh so sweet. I actually think, though I feel SO very wrong for saying it, that the hottest scene was actually near the beginning, where Luke’s imagination gets away with him when King is performing his stud service, and his new boss Clay is nearby. It’s totally weird, strange, but oddly hot. Not quite sure why, but that scene stuck with me. I imagined Lay riding Luke in the arena after that, but alas, this is not a kinky story.

This is a slow build to a sweet romance, of the untried virgin variety, but knowing that, if you’re looking for a sweet love story then that’s what Tachna delivers, beautifully narrated, with plenty of interesting characters.

But Crawford has been burned by marriage once, and he’s determined not to make that mistake again.

Neither of them expects real feelings to bloom out of their fake marriage, but they do. And the two of them have to learn how to be honest with each other to make things work, which is especially hard when their entire marriage is based on lies.

Review: Get ready to suspend your disbelief for Bru Baker’s contribution to Dreamspinner Press’s Dreamspun Desires series. The title of the book, Tall, Dark and Deported, gives you most of the information that you need to know about the type of story you’re about to read – so if you keep on going despite being deterred by the title then it’s your own fault! 😉

What you see is definitely what you get with the blurb. We got one hot South American (sorry, can’t think of his country of origin from the top of my head) side-eyes Prime *cough* Portugal, so European ~Pixie~), Mateus. He’s done something rather silly and used the internet to get answers about how to “reset” his visa. He wants to stay with his brother and sister in law longer now that they are setting up their own orchard and his sister in law is about to have a baby. He’s excited about being an uncle and wants to be there. That’s why, at the airport, he meets Crawfard. Crawford is a businessman and after meeting Mateus, he is willing to help the guy, which of course means marriage!

Despite being a predictable plot, this is totally enjoyable as way as to just lose yourself. As I said in the opening sentence, you will need to suspend your disbelief but that don’t let that deter you from the sweet romance (well, insta-love romance) that unfolds between the two men.

Blurb: Marriage gets less convenient when love is involved.

It started simple: Ondrej Kovac marries Archie Katsaros so Ondrej can stay in the US, away from his judgmental family in eastern Europe. Archie marries Ondrej in exchange for the money to bail out his failing company. It’s a fraud neither man is convinced he can pull off.

But as Archie introduces Ondrej to New York society and Ondrej proves his skill in the office, they start to discover a connection between them. Can they overcome the rocky foundation their relationship was built on, meddling immigration agents, gossip columnists determined to out their deception, and an aggressive executive set on selling Archie’s company out from under him? Only if they can prove to each other their love is worth fighting for.

Reviewer: Prime

Review: OK, confession time, I love Kate McMurray and everything she does. That means I’ve already read this story. However, interestingly, I have to say that I much preferred the audio over reading the book. I think that this has a lot to do with Rusty Topsfield’s wonderful narration, the guy is superb at his job and I love listening to him.

The story follows Archie Katsaros – really Archimedes and that reminds me of the The Once and Future King/Sword in the Stone more than it does a Greek Tycoon – he’s running the family’s business. In fact, he’s trying to keep it afloat after his father’s death while trying to live up to the lofty expectations set by himself while idolizing a father who perhaps did not deserve such devotion from his son. Then there is Ondrej Kovac. He’s Polish and wants to move to the US to be free of his family’s stifling expectations and to be himself, which means he wants to be free to love who he wants to love because his family will never accept his sexuality. When Ondrej’s work visa comes to an end, he and Archie embark on a harebrained scheme – Archie will marry Ondrej to give him a green card and Ondrej will provide Archie with the funds he needs to save the family company.

It’s fun to see the guys get to know each other. Archie is really just a teddy bear and needs the support of someone like Ondrey to bolster his confidence. Ondrej is quick as a whip and super intelligent, and somehow that is just the perfect match for Archie. As they get to know each other it’s fun to watch the sparks begin.

There are some plot holes, but nothing too big that you can’t get over, though I was largely happy with the character and plot development. It is more so down to the fact that the silly boys needed to communicate more and because some of the situations felt a little too contrived. But overall an interesting plot line and a fantastic narrator make for a pleasurable few hours of audio.

Review: For me this book was a war between absolute love and being rather annoyed.

I know the reason for it and that is, quite simply, that the writing style of BA Tortuga has always been something that I have trouble connecting with. But still I keep on going back because the type of stories Tortuga writes are what I like. However, the actual idea of the story and the whole “cowboys looking after a baby and finally reveal their feelings for each other” plot device – absolutely perfect. I also loved the touch of soap opera type of drama introduced when it comes to said baby’s paternity.

The story is about Hoss (seriously, this name, totally rubbed me the wrong way for reasons unknown) and his best friend since childhood, Bradley. They are both cowboys and have been secretly in love with each other years. One day, Hoss finds a baby randomly left on his door step and through some convoluted reasoning; he ends up looking after the baby girl with the help of his friend.

The story works in two parts, 1) Hoss and Bradley getting together, where one is out and the other is in the closet still, and, 2) looking after the baby and the mystery of where she came from. There was a twist at the end that came from nowhere, it’s a bit unbelievable, so people that like things to be more relatable may need to enter with an open mind. Seriously, when I say this is something you would see on Days of Our Lives /Neighbours/Coronation Street, believe it.

Regardless of my feelings of the author’s writing style, this was nevertheless an enjoyable read. I loved the plot, I loved the characters and I loved the setting.

Review: Let me start off by saying that while I was not wowed by this book, I did enjoy listening to it and was quite happy to suspend my disbelief as we entered the world of Hollywood with all its not so glamorous business. Part of me had higher expectations – mostly because I enjoy many stories by MJ O’Shea, in addition to the narration by John Solo, who is by far one of my favorite narrators. He has a definite way with words and being able to convey the perfect emotions with his tone.

The story follows publicist to the stars, Kerry Pickering. Kerry is the consummate professional and has been career driven for a long time. He has learnt a lot in his time in Hollywood and despite the fact that he can only dream of the luxury his clients live in, he is happy in his job and his rundown apartment that he shares with his younger brother. Seriously, Kerry is the kind of guy everyone would love.

But then we meet one particular pain the ass client, Jericho. He’s up himself and for the most part not very likeable – and that is definitely what took away from my enjoyment of the book. He’s not just brash and snobbish; it’s hard to really see what is in his heart. I spent most of the story annoyed with the guy. The saving grace to this though is that Kerry isn’t about to bow down to Jericho’s overbearing and generally horrible attitude and for that, I love him. Jericho also manages to redeem himself as well, which is always a bonus.

The latest snowstorm carries something unexpected to the doorstep of Hutch’s secluded Alaskan cabin: a stranger named Jude, the most beautiful man Hutch has ever seen. Jude says he’s in the area for a ski trip and that he fled a domineering lover, thinking he could make it into town. But Hutch is a suspicious SOB and treats his unwanted guest warily. The problem is Jude isn’t just gorgeous, he’s funny and smart and flirtatious.

Two gay men snowed in for three days—things happen. Really good things. By the time the storm clears, Hutch finds himself a little too attached to Jude Devereaux, San Francisco-based male model. But is Jude what he claims to be? Or is he entangled in the secrets Hutch moved to Alaska to escape?

Review: I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. I didn’t outright dislike the book, but at the same time I didn’t love it. I think it had more to do with the depth (or lack thereof) of the plot rather than the writing style. I’ve read and enjoyed books by Eli Easton in the past. So I think, for me, this is one of those books where it was good enough but certainly not my cup of tea.

The blurb for this book really only covers the first half of the book. The second half of the book is only addressed by two questions at the end of the blurb. The story opens with Hutch, who lives isolated in Alaska, finding a man stumble upon his cabin. Jude is basically hypothermic when he finds his way to Hutch’s cabin, but with his “sob story” (as I like to call it), with the two hot men snowed in for a few days the stage is set for a fun time. But not everything is as it seems. When the snow begins to clear reality brutally comes crashing down and Hutch has to face that not only can he not run from his past, but not everything is as it seems in the present.

I really can’t say anything else because there is no hint in the blurb and I don’t want to spoil things. However, suffice to say if you like a bit of intrigue – spies, military and whatnot – then you might well enjoy this story. For me, I think, something about the flow of the story didn’t go well for. Everything just happened – bam, bam, bam – we were told the facts but I never fully felt the emotions of the MCs despite the fact that I really, desperately wanted to.

Blurb: A second chance born of love.

Pat Corrigan and Edgerton “Edge” Winters were ready to start a family—or so Pat thought. At the last minute, Edge got cold feet and fled. Pat didn’t bother telling him the conception had already gone through and little Emma was on her way. He didn’t want a relationship based on obligation. He’d rather raise his daughter on his own.

Nine years later, Emma and her Poppy are doing fine. Edge isn’t. He realizes what he threw away by leaving, and he’s back to turn his life around and reclaim his family. It’ll take a lot to prove to Pat that he’s a new man, and even if Edge succeeds, the secret Pat has hidden for years might shatter their dreams all over again.

Review: For me Andrew Grey is always a go to on my list of authors I must read. He has a way with emotion and getting the reader (or at least me) to connect to his characters’ emotions with his magical use of words. Poppy’s Secret is no exception to this, even if the secret only one layer of many that function in the book to keep our MCs apart until they, essentially, get their shit together. I also love how Andrew Grey weaves in themes of love and family – often with a child character who is being raised by a strong single father until the love interest enters the picture.

As for the story itself, it’s quite predictable in the way that you can just see exactly what is going to happen or at least figure out the facts/secrets between the two MCs. It’s the how and the why of the story which makes this book a ride worth taking. Nine years ago Pat and Edge had been head over heels in love and planning for a surrogate to start a family. But Edge got cold feet and left their small town home for Boston and never looked back. Yet in the present, he is back in Harrisburg and one thing on his list is definitely trying to make up for the mistake he had made when he had left Pat. Edge has a lot of groveling in his future, trying to make his way into Pat’s, and Pat’s daughter Emma’s life.

This is a wonderful story of everlasting love, strength and reunion. Andrew Grey fans will not be disappointed, this one reminds me in part of some of the installments from his Senses series, which I adore.
