 A Restored Man

(The Men of Halfway House 03)
 by

Jaime Reese

Cole Renzo thinks his greatest challenge is to behave for the remainder of his term at Halfway House. Until he meets his new boss, Ty Calloway, a man who ticks off every box on Cole’s list of interests.

A sought-after restorer and customizer of exotic and collectible cars, Ty had enough confidence to command what he wanted in life, until one fateful night changed everything. Almost two years later, he’s slowly rebuilding his life with great control. He’s defied the odds and works tirelessly to be the man he once was—but he still feels broken.

Cole’s candor and unfiltered personality awaken Ty’s barely-remembered desire to greet each new day with a smile, while Ty’s unwavering acceptance of Cole’s quirks and brash humor makes Cole feel as if he fits in for the first time in far too long. When a nemesis threatens Ty’s personal restoration and the things he holds dear, Cole is determined to protect their relationship, even if that means sacrificing everything he’s worked so hard to achieve.

But Ty will have to let his guard down, surrender control, and admit he needs Cole first, even if that puts himself at risk of breaking beyond repair.

“I thought those were the service bays,” Cole said, thumbing over his shoulder.

“They’re for the traditional shop work my techs do on a daily basis. These are my service calls. Side project I’m doing and there’s no money in it for the guys so I don’t really want to burden them. I figured we could work on them and, in between, we could tinker with the Yenko if you want or wrap up the last few details on the Drayton rig. I worked on most of it over the weekend but there are still a few things to finish up.”

Cole stopped walking. “You’d let me work on the Yenko with you?”

Ty nodded. “Sure, why not. I’ve seen how picky you are with your work.”

“So it’s my reward for helping you with your service calls?”

Ty chuckled. “Do you do tricks too?”

Cole raised an eyebrow and half smiled. “Oh, I’ve got a lot of tricks I can show you.” He smiled at the rush of color to Ty’s cheeks, loving the way Ty always reacted to his teasing.

“You do realize you’re an HR nightmare,” Ty said, looking at Cole with that glimmer in his eye.

Cole’s pulse raced. “HR?”

“Human Resources. Sexual harassment, all that,” Ty said, trying to look serious and indifferent, but failing miserably.

Cole belly-laughed so loud it echoed in the shop. He then stilled, straightened his shoulders, and mocked a serious tone. “I could, of course, be completely professional and proper with you, Mr. Calloway, if that is your preference,” he said, mimicking Matt’s formal tone.

Ty turned to face him, the mock seriousness transitioning into something more genuine. “And I, of course,” he said, reciprocating Cole’s tone, “would be deeply disappointed.”

He looked up into those brown eyes and smiled. “My army of superheroes and I would be as well.” He bit back a smile and bowed.

Ty’s low rumble-laugh shot straight to Cole’s dick.

Cole straightened. “Admit it, you like me.”

Ty raised his hand and put his thumb and index fingertips together with only a sliver of a gap between them. “Maybe a little bit.”

Cole looked at Ty’s fingers then glanced back at him with a huge grin on his face. “It’s a start,” he said before walking off to the two cars parked in the bay.

Review: Woot! Phenomenal! Love this story! A Restored Man, Book #3 in Jaime Reese’s, The Men of Halfway House, more than delivered on every expectation I could hope for. From the first page until the last I was connected to this book. This installment, into the series, I suppose, could be a standalone. However, the back story, the secondary characters, the journey each, up to this point, have made…IMO, are all crucial elements needed in the overall development and enjoyment of A Restored Man.

From the moment we met Cole in, A Hunted Man, you just knew he was going to be a fireball of energy. Cole is staying at the Halfway House where he will finish serving his time from a 2 year prison sentence. Hunter, from the last novel, laid down some stipulations to Cole that he must adhere to if he wanted his car. Getting a job and keeping it will be his first of the many challenges he faces. His self-esteem will be another.

Jaime Reese - A Restored Man fanart jaime reese a restored manTwo years ago, Ty Calloway, was living large. He was on the top of his game, restoring and customizing cars, and on the walls are his awards and plaques to show for it. But, on a day that should’ve been one of his happiest, will only be a haunting reminder of everything he lost. Tragedy found him and left him a broken man, a shell of his former self. He lost his will and motivation to do much of anything other than put up a good front. Living, day to day, trying to meet each challenge head on, apparently wasn’t enough of a blow to Ty’s psyche. He, also, carries a secret that threatens him daily and causes him to live in fear of the repercussions.

Walking into Ty’s shop, seeing all of the exotic cars and the man himself, will forever change Cole’s world. If he can do what he is supposed to, keep his mouth in check (a mouth that always seems to get him in trouble), he may have just encountered the best thing to ever happen in his life. But, his mouth does overload sometimes…okay…most of the time, because he has a bad case of verbal diarrhea. If he’s thinking it, it usually spills out of his mouth. He is trying so hard to pause before he speaks but it’s a constant work in progress.

The funny thing though…Ty loves it. Loves his unfiltered garble, his witty comebacks, and his fun personality. If Cole wants to sing and dance, whether in the kitchen or the garage he does so and for the first time in over 2 years, Ty is smiling, a lot, and laughing so loud that everyone takes notice.

“You said he cracked a couple of jokes?”

“Yeah, so?” Cole said, crossing his arms and firmly holding Jeff’s stare.

“Did he laugh?”

Cole scrunched his brow. “Yeah, he thinks he’s funny. So?”

A slow smile spread across Jeff’s face. “Like I said, keep doing what you’re doing,” he said then walked away.

Jaime Reese has taken two characters and matched them together, perfectly. Ty is vulnerable and dealing with emotional as well as physical pain. Cole sees everything that Ty tries to hide. With the building of their friendship, he has given vitality back to him through laughter and constant flirting. Ty was drowning in despair until Cole wormed his way through his firmly erected walls. He was self-conscious of his body and the road map showing every horrific thing he has endured. He carries a constant fear of what Cole may think if he sees it. No worries, Cole finds him absolutely breathtaking and won’t stop telling him until Ty believes it himself.

Cole is such an amazing character. He’s brave and strong and knows exactly the right things to do or say to help Ty overcome his hang-ups. Their relationship is not fast. They are building a foundation, although, their friendship is immediate. Their chemistry if off the charts. Cole’s constant flirting, a touch here or there, literally, keeps a smile on your face through the entire story. Cole is eager and more than ready to sleep with Ty. But, he takes his time and allows their connection to grow and become a very strong and trustworthy bond between the two that won’t break. Their sexual relationship is made up of intimate/ butterflies in your stomach/ moments that you feel in your own stomach.

Jaime is a masterful storyteller. The proof is in the way she brilliantly built the anticipation, escalated their emotions, causing not only them but myself to be completely enthralled in their union. A lot of their sexual moments, not all, are off page. I like sex in my stories. I like to be a witness to those turning and life-changing moments. But, every now and then, you find an author who knows how to write so eloquently that the penetration is not even close to the main focus. The build-up, the chewing your fingernails, the bouncing of your knee, all become these vital moments of intimacy and sensuality that trump the actual sex. Trust me on this. The intimacy and the bond between Cole and Ty make this one of the hottest and sexiest love stories you will ever read. The author takes you there, sets the scene, and with your own imagination you see everything they are experiencing. It is written so exquisitely it becomes a living and breathing emotion. You feel it in your heart and soul and that is no lie. I was completely engrossed in this story.

Cole reached between them and gripped their shafts together in one hand.

Ty’s body arched into Cole’s touch, reveling in the pressure and rhythmic friction.

“You’re killing me. I’m not a saint,” Cole said, moving his hand up and down in a steady, slow rhythm. Cole dove in with greater force for another kiss.

Ty moaned when Cole pulled his head back by his hair, then peppered a trail of kisses along his neck. He couldn’t control the whimper that escaped when Cole shifted his hand and pressed his thumb against the tip of Ty’s shaft.

I was so excited to get this book and continue the journey with the men of Halfway House. The author’s ingenuity speaks for itself and will leave you in awe with this storyline. The execution and detail was seamless. While the story left me feeling very gratified, I also had a whole lot of sad when it came to an end. I sat down to read this story and it was hours before I even lifted my head to see what was going on around me. I did not want this story to come to an end and that is a great feeling. There is nothing more displeasing than to have high hopes for a book and it fall flat. That is NOT the case here. I had to make myself put it down, walk away, and take a breather, just so I could stretch it out a little longer.

Jaime is so good at developing her characters, fleshing them out, and giving them heart. It’s no wonder that they wrap themselves around your own heart. To find a book of this magnitude where it hits on every button is like finding a goldmine. The characters become real and relatable. You feel and experience every emotion they go through. You laugh when they laugh and you cry (and oh yes, I had moments of bawling) when they try to make some wrongs into right.

It would be a travesty to leave out how phenomenal the side characters were. They were crucial to the plot of this story and added a whole other level of respect to the author’s creativity. I can only hope that some of them will have their own story to share with us later on.

There is so much depth to this storyline. The dialogue is witty and there is this chase and catch theme that has you grinning from ear to ear. The best advice is to read it for yourself, experience every facet of their journey, and make your own connection with these amazing men. Their journey is not always easy. There are people that will stop at nothing to steal their joy. Together, they are very strong. They believe in each other. Their foundation is strong, made up with love and trust. Bring on the bad guys, let them give it their best shot. With this group of guys on your side you’re only recourse is WIN!! WIN! WIN! Cole and Ty have become my favorite. I can’t wait to see who Jaime writes about next. I think I have a good idea, but I’ll have to wait and see.
